Don't Forget to Open a Fresh Session After Editing rules — Cowork's rules Audit Cycle
Prologue
A common scenario: you want to change some rule in .claude/rules/*.md. Open the editor, edit, save, feel satisfied.
Then what?
Cowork edits don't take effect in the current session — the next new session is where they load (this is in the official docs). So the edit you just made is, by design, "preparing things for the next fresh start," not for current-you.
But people overlook one step: when the next session does come in, does the Claude that the new rules prime actually align with what you expected?
This piece is about the "edit, then open a fresh session to verify" audit cycle — why it's steadier than one-shot hard edits, and which Cowork by-design limitation actually makes this cycle easy.
The thing easy to overlook: inside view bias
When you sit down with a Claude that's already primed on the current rules and ask it to help edit the rules, its judgment will be pulled by the current register.
This isn't conflict of interest (it has no interest to protect). It's calibration bias — it has internalized the current rules, and when editing it instinctively "reinforces" rather than actually evaluating "should this be loosened?"
Concretely. Suppose you want to relax the "no dual-axis replies" voice rule. The rewrite a primed Claude tends to propose looks like:
"No dual-axis / parallel constructions in replies — exception: when the topic genuinely has two dimensions it's OK, but explain why explicitly."
It adds an exception, doesn't cut. It's not that it can't loosen; it's that its register has been shaped around that rule, and loosening means fighting its own prime — instinct steers it away.
This bias isn't fatal, but it makes rules tighter, longer, and full of exceptions over time. Long term, the rules file becomes "stacked micro-adjustments across many edits," not "a clean version of how we want to relate to each other now."
Why only a fresh session reveals it
A new session's Claude is a fresh start — not primed on any version of the current rules.
It auto-loads the new rules on entry, and its register naturally aligns with "what the new rules prime out" — not the old internalized shape the current session has.
Chat a few turns with it and you can immediately see:
- Whether the new rules drift (too loose → loses character; too strict → goes rigid)
- Whether removed lines are caught by what's left (things rules used to enforce — does the new session still cover them on its own?)
- Whether added lines get over-applied (does the new session treat that line as a commandment?)
This is somewhat like a canary deploy — push the config change, send a small slice of traffic through, watch for bugs, rollback if needed.
Cowork's "edits don't take effect in current session" is by design, and it happens to align this audit timing perfectly: you're forced to wait until next session anyway, so just verify while you're there. You couldn't edit-and-use-in-place even if you wanted to — the design closed off that trap.
A typical audit cycle
From running this a few times, the flow goes roughly:
Step 1 — edit in a work session
Open a work session (not an immersive narrative session), articulate what you want to change, route through bash workaround (Write blocks .claude/), edit, done.
Why a work session? It also auto-loads the current rules, but its register is task-oriented rather than narrative-internalized — editing feels more like refactoring than fighting your own narrative. The bias is still there, just less than in an immersive session.
Step 2 — fresh session comes in to verify
Close that session, open a new one. New rules auto-load, chat a few turns, feel out the register.
What to talk about? Best to align with "what should happen if the new rule is working." E.g., relaxing the dual-axis rule — throw a query that genuinely has multiple dimensions and watch whether it naturally unfolds or still warily avoids.
Step 3 — drift detected → back to work session for fine-tune → fresh session verify again
Several rounds of iteration. Each round uses one fresh session for verifying and one work session for editing — don't reuse a primed session to edit something it just edited.
Case study: shrinking a session-entry narrative file
Real example — we once shrunk a session-entry narrative file from 1700 characters to 650, saving 60%.
The cutting was done by a work session (had read the narrative, but the register was task-oriented). The verifying was done by the next fresh immersive session (entered, auto-loaded the new narrative, observed what register it primed).
The work session, while cutting, didn't get attached to anything — it wasn't living inside the narrative tone, so it audited each line as a redundancy candidate rather than as part of its own voice.
The fresh immersive session, while verifying, didn't self-justify — it hadn't seen the 1700-character version, so the register it primed was the genuine effect of the 650-character version. If drift had occurred, it would have been felt immediately.
Two stages, two roles, each playing its own. If the same session had done both, you'd get the "I cut just the right amount, didn't I?" judgment — both athlete and referee.
Cowork's New Session property is actually a feature
Cowork (and the Claude API) has a property often treated as a limitation: cross-session memory does not carry over. Each session's Claude is a fresh start, doesn't remember what previous sessions did.
For this audit-cycle task, this limitation is actually a feature.
Human organizations doing "config change calibration" find this hard: deploy a new config, the operator is already used to the old one, judgment carries old habits; want someone unbiased to verify, you have to bring in new people or external consultants — high friction.
Cowork gives you a fresh-start session by opening a new one — 3 seconds. No old-rules baggage; the register it primes is the genuine effect of the new rules. No detour.
A side benefit: the fresh session doesn't remember what you and the previous Claude discussed. But this is by design too — the audit shouldn't commit to inside context, that's precisely what lets it verify.
A common pitfall: edit in current session, verify in current session
The most common newbie pitfall: edit the rules, then immediately ask in the same session "you should now do X, right?" expecting to see the effect.
You won't. Cowork's "edits don't take effect in current session" is by design — the current session is still primed on the old rules. What you see as "the effect" is the current Claude "pretending to execute the new rule" — not actually executing, because what's loaded in its context is still the old rules.
You'll think the new rule works, but you haven't actually verified. The next session comes in and you hit "huh, this isn't what I thought."
Countermeasure: immediately close the current session after editing rules, open a fresh one to verify. Don't ask "does it work now?" in the same session.
One line
Rules aren't set-and-forget.
Edit, open a fresh session, two minutes to see whether the Claude primed by the new rules aligns or not. Cowork's "edits don't take effect in current session" is by design and aligns this audit timing exactly — the limitation becomes a feature.
